According to an article from The Mercury News printed on January 1, 2007, "Many Californian handle their Own divorces- Not as Well."
The reasoning Californians are self representing themselves, the article went on to say that it is because there are fewer legal aid services and the rising costs of attorneys fees. People feel as though they can handle things on their own and prepare their own paperwork. But in fact, the legal system is very complex and should not be navigated by people without legal expertise or experience.
Many Court Officials and legal experts worry that thousands of former California couples don't realize that their marriage aren't finalized after ending their marriage. About 80 percent of people that file for divorce in California, try to handle their own divorce paperwork . Approximately one third of all petitions filed from the 80 percent, have not been finalized or filed properly.
At a legal service center in Van Nuya, CA, Court officials stated that about 20 people a month thought they were legally divorced, but they were incorrect. Other couples were upset because they remarried without correctly completing the previous divorce.
Make sure you are divorced before you attempt to get remarried.
